Along with the announcement of CityFest Art and Music Festival 2018, comes some other exciting news that rainbow crosswalks in Hillcrest may soon become a reality.

Fabulous Hillcrest posted on their Facebook page that "VIP and donation tickets will help fund and bring rainbow crosswalks to Hillcrest!"

You can register for a free admission ticket HERE, but those who wish to make a donation or upgrade to a VIP will actually be contributing to the Hillcrest Rainbow Crosswalks Project.

Many cities across the world have painted the colorful installations in their gay districts and the San Diego LGBT community has recently wondered why Hillcrest hasn't done the same.

Five years ago Executive Director of the Hillcrest Business Association (HBA) Benjamin Nicholls proposed the idea. Then recently the streets of Hillcrest were repaved, generating a new discussion about the project.

We talked to Councilmember Ward at the time and he said there might be pushback at the federal level over a project like this, and there are some safety concerns, but he isn't opposed to the idea.

"I’ll be working to find solutions to this problem and will actively engage residents in that process," he said. "It’s critical that a placemaking project is chosen that builds on the character and identity of our communities in District Three."

CityFest is celebrating 35 years as San Diego's ultimate summer art and music festival. The event takes over 5th Avenue from noon to 11 pm on Sunday, August 12, with music, food, DJ's, arts, crafts, and thousands of people still glowing after another record-breaking San Diego Pride.

A grand stage with live music will keep you entertained from noon - 7 pm, followed by headliner DJ's and talent until 11 pm. An impressive cocktail bar and Miller-Coors Beer Garden featuring Hop Valley Brewing Co.'s Reveal Pale Ale, will keep you hydrated while over 250 vendors offer incredible shopping opportunities.

Hillcrest shops and restaurants along 5th Ave, Robinson, and University will come alive with community spirit at CityFest Art and Music Festival 2018, giving attendees a place to dive in and explore.
