Two fathers were stabbed by their adoptive son on Tuesday in their Sherman Oaks, Calif., home early Tuesday morning.

Ken Coll and Tom Boulet were taken to the hospital with serious injuries after their adopted son, Matthew Boulet, stabbed them with a pocket knife according to KABC News.

Reports say the attack came after a heated family argument, although it's not clear what exactly prompted the disagreement.

Police are investigating whether or not mental illness plays a part in the attack.

Neighbors say the fathers are openly gay and adopted Matthew, now in his early 20s, when he was just a boy; they are shocked to hear that he stabbed them.

"Tom and Ken have been very significant on our block, great models of parenthood," neighbor Florence Riggs told KABC.
