“If you need a mom to attend your same sex wedding because your biological mom won’t. Call me. I’m there."
Sara Cunningham from Oklahoma says she will be your mother for a day if you want one.
An ordained minister, Cunningham posted the "PSA" on her Facebook page saying,
“If you need a mom to attend your same sex wedding because your biological mom won’t. Call me. I’m there. I’ll be your biggest fan. I’ll even bring the bubbles.”
The post is quickly making it into viral numbers with over 8,000 shares at this time.
BuzzFeed News got in touch with the wedding guest by proxy and said she made her announcement after officiating many gay weddings where maternal support was absent.
“The post came from hearing from several same-sex couples — how their parents refuse to attend their wedding, or even acknowledge their relationships,” she explained. “People need hope — I sure do — and we need to be that for each other in any way, shape, or form. Hope never disappoints.”
There is also a personal reason for becoming an activist and ally, her son came out. “I thought, If my son is going to hell for being gay I’m gonna fight for him like my hair is on fire,” she said in the interview with BuzzFeed. “Since then I’ve gotten educated and no longer believe that — so now I’ve [been] fighting for him and the LGBTQ community like my hair is on fire because I’ve seen the power of what fear and ignorance can do.”
Cunningham is a Christain who says people can keep their religious beliefs and support LGBT community at the same time.
Her personal experience was a "journey that took me from the church to the pride parade without losing my faith.”
Since the posting, Cunningham's comments section has been filled with support, many others offering to attend weddings as stand-ins too.
"Wow, this is absolutely amazing!" wrote Chris Deanne, "I know so many people who’s (sic) families turn away from them, I even thought my mom would at first but she came around. You are an inspiration to ALL. If anyone needs a stand in brother/cousin/bestman/just a friend in NYC I’ll be there!"
