Although the Trump administration didn't officially recognize June as Pride Month, the number of Pride festivals around the country and the world seemed to be all the validation the community needed. But this year also brought with it plenty of detractors who challenged "LGBT Pride," suggesting also a "Straight Pride Month."

To that ideal, a California politician has proclaimed that July should be known as "SPAM: Straight Pride American Month."

Vice Mayor Ted Hickman of Dixon, Calif., wrote a column in the local paper Independent Voice calling June "LGBTQF-WTF month" and asking that SPAM be the hetero alternative.

"We ARE different from them. We work, have families, (and babies we make) enjoy and love the company (and marriage) of the opposite sex and don't flaunt our differences dressing up like faries [sic] and prancing by the thousands in a parade in nearby San Francisco to be televised all around the world," he wrote in the article. He says he's not "anti-anything," instead people shouldn't get their "pantyhose in a knot."

"Now hundreds of millions of the rest us can celebrate our month," he wrote, "peaking on July 4th as healthy, healthy, heterosexual, fairly monogamous, keep our kinky stuff to ourselves, Americans."

His comments have sparked a Facebook page which asks for his recall and councilmember Devon Minnema to say in an official statement that Hickman's words are disturbing, "I have known what kind of person he is for a long time, but have never garnered enough community or council support to take action. I hope that the other councilmen will see through the ideology of hate that they share with him, and do the right thing in coming weeks."

The mayor of Dixon wasn't happy with the editorial either but isn't planning on removing him from office because of the First Amendment.

Equality California wants Hickman to resign, they said in a statement, "Despite all the progress we've made, hate and intolerance are alive and well in fringe politicians like Mr. Hickman who spew hateful rhetoric in an attempt to dehumanize members of our LGBTQ community."
