Kansas will make it illegal for gay and lesbian parents to adopt or foster children.
Early Thursday morning legislation passed with verbiage which emphasizes discrimination against people based on the religious beliefs of the agency.
At about 2 am Friday morning, the Kansas state Senate passed the bill 24-15. The House also agreed with a 63-58 vote the night before.
Now the bill goes in front of Kansas Governor Jeff Colyer (R) who says he will sign it into law.
“Catholic Charities and other adoption agencies are key to the fabric of our communities. I look forward to signing this bill because it increases the opportunities for needy children to find loving homes,” Gov. Colyer said.
This news comes on the heels of President Trump signing an executive order on Thursday which he says will protect, "the faith-based and community organizations that form the bedrock of our society have strong advocates in the White House and throughout the federal government.”
On the same day, Trump announced the formulation of a new "White House Faith and Opportunity Initiative."
This new office will advise the administration on issues concerning "religious liberty" and bring attention to violations of the executive order.
