One of the very first LGBT-affirming property in the nation developed by Community HousingWorks (CHW) held its grand opening in San Diego this past Friday.

Called the North Park Seniors, this historic facility is welcoming to all seniors, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or other protected class status.

“This new development is open to all and provides a positive and supportive environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender seniors; a first for San Diego and one of only a handful in the nation,” said San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer.

Over two hundred people attended the grand opening ceremony including Assemblyman Todd Gloria, Councilman Chris Ward, Representative Susan Davis and Deputy Chief Operating Officer with the City of San Diego, David Graham.

This 76-home apartment building is located at Texas Street and Howard Avenue in San Diego’s North Park neighborhood

“North Park Seniors is much more than just a building,” said resident Terry Vaughan. “For many of us that live here, a home like this is a dream decades in the making.”

The San Diego LGBT Community Center (The Center) will provide supportive services which include resources, referrals and engaging community activities to enrich the quality of living for tenants while helping them lead independent lives.

“This community is the product of years of advocacy, hard work, and collaboration between nonprofits, neighborhood leaders, elected officials, and San Diego community members. We are proud to build a brighter future for all San Diego seniors with this LGBT-affirming community," said Sue Reynolds, President, and CEO of CHW.

Potential residents must be 55 years or older and meet certain income requirements. Decisions on tenants are made in accordance with the Fair Housing Act and state law.

“The opening of this community represents a tremendous milestone for our organization,” said Robert Gottlieb, Chair of CHW’s Board of Directors. “We would not be here without the incredible support from our community of seniors, our supporters and our generous funders.”
