Women's March San Diego is planning an event locally on March 24.
In the wake of the mass shooting that befell Parkland's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Feb. 14 which left 17 people dead, students are taking a stand against gun violence by vowing to march on Washington and other major cities including San Diego.
The rally is called the "March for Our Lives" and is scheduled to take place on March, 24. Students say it’s not a protest for any one political party, but those individuals who continue to support the National Rifle Association (NRA) at the expense of human lives.
Survivor Cameron Kasky told CNN, “This is about us begging for our lives; this isn’t about the GOP, this isn’t about the Democrats, this is about us creating a badge of shame for any politicians accepting money from the NRA and using us as collateral."
Perhaps one of the most impassioned speeches came from another Parkland student, senior Emma Gonzales who called out President Trump, accusing him of accepting money from the NRA. She also blames people who knew the shooter, and those who let him buy the guns in the first place.
"And how about we stop blaming the victims for something that was the student's fault, the fault of the people who let him buy the guns in the first place, those at the gun shows, the people who encouraged him to buy accessories for his guns to make them fully automatic, the people who didn't take them away from him when they knew he expressed homicidal tendencies, and I am not talking about the FBI. I'm talking about the people he lived with. I'm talking about the neighbors who saw him outside holding guns," Gonzales said in her speech.
Women's March San Diego is planning to honor the "March for Our Lives" rally on March 24. They say in a Facebook event listing;
"School safety is not a political issue. There cannot be two sides to doing everything in our power to ensure the lives and futures of children who are at risk of dying when they should be learning, playing, and growing.
The mission and focus of March For Our Lives is to demand that a comprehensive and effective bill be immediately brought before Congress to address these gun issues. No special interest group, no political agenda is more critical than timely passage of legislation to effectively address the gun violence issues that are rampant in our country.
Please mark your calendars and plan to join us in solidarity as we support the students on this effort. Details to include location and time are TBD."
