On the heels of his decree proclaiming January 16, 2018, as “Religious Freedom Day,” President Trump has created a division in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Civil Rights sector which will legally allow health care providers to discriminate against LGBT people and women.

This special department makes it easier for individuals who for religious reasons want to exclude anyone they deem unworthy the right to health services based on their personal religious beliefs.

Sarah Kate Ellis, president and CEO of GLAAD denounced this news in a press release this morning.

“Any healthcare worker who has moral objections to providing medically necessary care to an entire vulnerable population is in the wrong line of work,” said Ellis. “Denying a transgender person – or any person – life saving care if they walk into an emergency room is far from a moral act, it is unjust and dangerous. Trump, Pence, and Trump’s appointees have tried time and again to establish blatantly bigoted policies that harm transgender and gender non-conforming Americans, and history will neither forget nor forgive this Administration’s attacks on its own people.”

Politico is reporting that the proposal creates a “Conscious and Religious Freedom Division of the HHS."

This division further threatens an already difficult healthcare process for trans folks.

"19% of respondents reported being refused care became of their gender identity, and 28% were subjected to harassment in medical settings. This direct targeting of an already vulnerable community from the White House is part of a clear and dangerous pattern including revoking protections for trans students, the proposed trans military ban, and reportedly seeking to censor the word “transgender” from the Center of Disease Control budget documents," GLAAD reports.

The person pushing this directive is anti-LGBT and former Heritage Foundation employee Roger Severino who Trump appointed as head of the Office of Civil Rights at the Department of Health and Human Services.

Severino also believes in conversion therapy and that LGBT discrimination is "based not on any sort of hatred but, in fact, out of love.”

Details of this new department are expected to be revealed this week.
