The Golden State enacted the California Healthy Youth Act in January 2016 which says that middle school students receive, “comprehensive, accurate, and unbiased” instruction on birth control, abortion and sexual orientation.

The mandate was actually not embraced by everybody, but Fresno Unified school board president Brooke Ashjian had a very outspoken reaction to the curriculum saying if kids hear gay people exist, it will turn them gay.

“My biggest fear in teaching this, which we’re going to do it because it’s the law, but you have kids who are extremely moldable at this stage,” he said. “And if you start telling them that LGBT is okay and that it’s a way of life, well, maybe you just swayed the kid to go that way.”

Ashjian doesn’t allow his children to participate in sex ed, which is an option every parent has when it comes time to teach the class.

Not only does Ashjian criticize the human sexuality course he thinks the Bible should be taught instead, “It’s so important for parents to teach these Judeo-Christian philosophies,” he adds.

Not everyone is in agreement with Ashjian’s assertions. Interim superintendent Bob Nelson said, “Fresno Unified firmly believes that students and staff perform best in an environment where tolerance, diversity, and inclusiveness are practiced and valued.”

Ashjian doubled-down on Facebook blaming parents for failing to teach their kids about sex.

“Your child should NEVER hear about this first from a teacher!” He wrote. “The schools feed them breakfast, lunch, provide psychological services, before-school babysitting, after-school care, the list goes on and on… What do the parents do anymore?”
