Jason Arrone and Kunal Ghose were happy, now heartbroken as adoption agency sends them email about closure.
The anticipation of adopting a child is already an emotional event, but one San Diego couple was dealt a heartbreaking blow last week when the adoption agency they used in hopes of starting a new family sent them a shocking message.
Jason Arrone and Kunal Ghose tell NBC 7 San Diego that they have been in the process of adopting a child since last May.
They say they paid $15,000 to the Independent Adoption Center, a non-profit agency based in Los Angeles, but were crushed when that organization suddenly went bankrupt, taking their dreams and their money with them.
"The idea of it (the process) just stopping and not only did we, literally, lose all of our money, but having to start the whole process all over," said Arrone.
The adoption procedure can be a long one, first they must find a birth mother then endure a legal process which includes contractual agreements and a court appearance.
"I'm just absolutely devastated, just dumbfounded and blindsided from what happened," said Arrone.
The agency seemed unsympathetic to its clients plights and uncharismatically sent out an email saying, “the Independent Adoption Center is closed, and declaring Chapter 7 bankruptcy.”
"We were kind of excited, moving forward," Arrone said. “And then literally out of left field, even from what I can tell, the people who work there had no idea it was gonna happen until right before we were told.”
Arrone and Ghose had already made a personal profile of themselves to send out to potential birth mothers and were blind-sided by the news the agency had closed.
"My first reaction was anger, and I'm still angry and need assurances," said Ghose. "What happened?"
He says there were no hints of trouble, but he and his husband did notice the agency was signing on more couples than finding adoptions.
The organization, in a letter, seemed to allude that the current political climate was to blame for the lack of potential birth mothers.
It read: "Societal changes have created an environment where there are fewer potential birth parents."
The letter also states that their clients can file a claim if they think they are entitled to a monetary reimbursement.
"It was almost insulting, like the idea, as if you 'thought' we were owed money. You have all of our money. It was just absurd," said Arrone to NBC 7.
During all of this Arrone and Ghose still have to decide their best course of action legally.
There is a Facebook support page which shows 700 people received the same news about the agency’s closing. About 20 San Diegans are a part of that list.
