Luxury apartments replace Sommerset Suites in Hillcrest this summer

Late last year San Diego Gay and lesbian News reported that Hillcrest’s 30-year-old Sommerset Hotel was being decommissioned and would turn into a complex of luxury apartments.

That realization is a step closer to reality as the Hillcrest establishment, now named “The Whitson”, has announced they are set to take tenants available to move in summer 2017.

Now owned by SENTRE Real Estate investment firm based in downtown San Diego, The Whitson is an 80-unit, boutique-style apartment building offering a “upscale living experience featuring modern amenities with a vintage flair.”

The crossover will keep the atmosphere of hotel living alive with an indoor-outdoor social lounge, community pool, and fitness center.

The hotel rooms have been remodeled into living quarters with select units getting hardwood planked flooring, stainless steel appliances, private balconies and “designer color schemes.”

SENTRE told SDGLN that they will offer studios from 1,750 - $1,850 a month, and one bedrooms from $2,100 - $2,300 a month.

For those who have pets, you may want to consider the complex's policy on animals.

Rent for one dog is $50, while a cat is $40 with a $25 increase for two.

The "Whitson" is also very selective of breeds. Pitbulls, Doberman Pinchers, American Bulldogs and German Shepards among others are not allowed.

Some in the Hillcrest community became concerned over the closure of the Sommerset; one of the only places in the local area for travelers to book local accommodations for big events such as San Diego Pride and Mardi Gras.

In November, the Uptown Community Plan was approved by The City Council, conforming to the City’s General Plan and Climate Action Plan.

This means that commercial areas of Mission Hills could see buildings rise higher than 50 feet, and areas west of Park Boulevard, in University Heights, could develop into newer buildings exceeding their 30-foot height restrictions.

Approval of the plan, which also included Hillcrest, means the long-standing vacant Pernicano’s restaurant space on University Avenue, might one day be sold and replaced by either more housing or another hotel.

Early in December it was announced that a seven-story mixed use building with retail shops, apartments and parking would be built at Robinson and Seventh Avenues.

The Whitson is slated to be fully functional in summer 2017, and a waitlist for those interested in moving into the apartment complex has been set up.

The Whitson is located at 606 Washington Street, San Diego, 92103.
