Target stores are now allowing customers to use restrooms that match their identifying gender.

The retail chain is the latest in a massive collection of corporations who are taking a stand against recent anti-LGBT legislation.

"We welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity," Target said in a statement. "Everyone deserves to feel like they belong."

The United States is currently amidst a political firestorm of hot button issues when it come to transgender rights.

States such as North Carolina, Mississippi and Tennessee have made it clear that they don’t want people using the restroom if they aren’t of the biological sex displayed on the door signage.

Target Corp. is based out of Minnesota where Republican senator Glenn Gruenhagen, is the lead sponsor for a bill in that state which would restrict transgender people from entering the restroom they feel more comfortable using.

Target is making a bold statement with its new policy amid the controversy and wants the public to know where they stand on the issue.

“Given the specific questions these legislative proposals raised about how we manage our fitting rooms and restrooms, we felt it was important to state our position," the company said.

Of course reaction to this new Target policy has been mixed.

"That means I won't be using your bathrooms or dressing rooms in the future," said one person from Indianapolis. "May have to rethink some other things too."

While others are grateful for the company’s decision.

"Thank you, Target!" said another customer.
