A message of love is turned to hate, when Whole Foods allegedly adds slur to cake
A Texas gay pastor just wanted a cake that read “Love Wins.” What he allegedly got instead was a cake with a disturbing editorial.
Pastor Jordan Brown says that he went into a Whole Foods store on April 14 and ordered a cake for his congregation Church of Open Doors.
The 30-year-old says that he requested the dessert to read “Love Wins,” and that when he retrieved it from the bakery it was sealed in a box with tape.
It wasn’t until further inspection after he left the store that he noticed the extra sentiment in blue icing accompanying his original request. The word “f*g” had been iced in underneath the original message.
Brown says that he returned to Whole Foods and confronted the person at the counter, who apologized and said they would correct the problem.
Two hours later and Brown says he got a phone call from the health food store saying they believed the additional word was added after he took the cake home and they weren’t going to change it.
Brown’s attorney Austin Kaplan told KEYE that he filed a lawsuit against Whole Foods after multiple failed attempts at contacting them.
“Pastor Brown never asked for this to happen,” said Kaplan. “He continues to be overwhelmed by the feelings of pain, anguish, and humiliation because of this incident.”
"He frequently shopped at Whole Foods, which makes this all the more shocking and disappointing. What really concerns him is knowing that unless some action is taken, this kind of thing could happen again, and that someone else might have to go through a similarly excruciating experience."
In a press conference held on Monday, April 18, Brown said that using that homophobic terminology is the same as calling a black person the n-word.
Whole Foods continues to stand by their claim that the word was added after Brown left the premises, but the pastor released a video (below) showing the cake and the tapped, store seal.
The chain released this statement denying the incident, claiming that the bakery employee in question is actually a part of the LGBT community.
“Our team members do not accept or design bakery orders that include language or images that are offensive. Whole Foods Market has a zero tolerance policy for discrimination.”
“We stand behind our bakery team member, who is part of the LGBTQ community, and the additional team members from the store, who confirmed the cake was decorated with only the message “Love Wins.”
