'Taste of Hillcrest' fills neighborhood with local flavor

Taste of Hillcrest draws in hundreds of curious culinary visitors

Hundreds of people descended upon Hillcrest this weekend for the annual “Taste of Hillcrest” event.

Nearly forty of the Hillcrest’s best restaurants, cafes and bars participated in this year’s tasting expo.

Eateries were located throughout the heart of the neighborhood and extended from Third Avenue, down University Avenue, ending on Park Boulevard.

Trolley service helped the culinary curious with frequent shuttle service to all participating locations.

Everything from classic burgers to the exotic were represented this year plus a few new surprises.

The Japanese/Mexican fused newcomer “Rolled Up” was a busy stop along the route. Owner James Markham was there with his children, greeting customers and making sure everyone got a sample of his sushi-burrito innovation.

The newly renamed "Pardon My French," formerly known as "Heat," also gave pedestrians a sample from their new menu.

"Urban Mo’s" had a line around the block in the 80-degree weather for people waiting to get a taste of something other than their signature cocktails.

As always "Gossip Grill" was buzzing with visitors as was "Uptown Tavern."  

The colorful Indian restaurant "Bombay" gave visitors a whole buffet of traditional foods to choose from such as Tikka Masala, Malai Kofta and aromatic saffron rice to name a few.

Dessert wasn’t missing from the streetside menus, “Babycakes” on Fifth Avenue was offering their delicious brownies and "Pinkberry" around the corner on Robinson Avenue offered tasters four different flavors of frozen yogurt.

Palette cleansers were also available, "Juice Crafters" offered a strawberry smoothie and "Fiesta Cantina" let adults imbibe on an afternoon Margarita after getting a taste of their Santa Monica Roll. 

All-in-all it was another sunny day in San Diego and a reminder that Hillcrest is becoming a world-class destination for food and entertainment.
