First-ever guide for educators and parents about transgender kids in K-12

Transgender children are becoming braver as they shed the timeworn belief that says you must identify with the gender you were given at birth.

Finally there is a guide that can help them and everyone else in the journey toward true identity in school and elsewhere.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Human Rights Campaign (HRC), along with Gender Spectrum, National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) and National Education Association (NEA) have teamed up to compile a guide which will help educators and parents alike to understand and help transgender children in their lives beginning from Kindergarten.

Schools in Transition; A Guide for Supporting Transgender Students in K-12 Schools, is a first for educators and parents who would like more guidance and advice for helping not only transgender children, but also those that might feel they are transgender.

With chapters which cover everything from the concepts of gender to legal landscapes, the guide is a helpful manual for strategies and practices to utilize when trying to understand transgender issues in all aspects of public life, especially in school.

For instance, the guide tackles topics such as the best way to approach field trips, bullying, changing in the locker room or going to the prom.

Authors Asaf Orr, the Transgender Youth Project staff attorney for NCLR, and Joel Baum, Gender Spectrum's senior director for professional development and family services, offer approaches based on research and personal testimonies:

“Statements, recommendations and resources are based on data,” the guide states. “Research and best practices that have been tested in the field, as well as narratives of real experiences from students, parents, caregivers and educators.”
