TACOMA, Washington -- A man used a pocketknife, a black marker and a dog leash to attack a 45-year-old lesbian as she walked down a Tacoma street early Sunday, police said Monday.
In response to the attack — which police have termed a hate crime — community leaders, Oasis Youth Center and Rainbow Center will take part in a community discussion Saturday.
The Rainbow Center is Tacoma’s drop-in support and resource center for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. The Oasis center supports LGBT youths ages 14-24.
“When I saw the report, I was very dismayed that something like that could happen in our community,” Tacoma City Councilman Ryan Mello, one of the discussion organizers, said Monday. “The community wants to have a place to come together to express their disgust and say ... ‘That’s not who we are as Tacomans.’ ”
