Hillcrest CityFest celebrates 30 years on Sunday

SAN DIEGO, California -- It's time for the next big summer tradition in the gayborhood: Hillcrest CityFest. And this year, the popular street fair and block party celebrates its 30th anniversary on Sunday, Aug. 10 from noon to 11 pm.

CityFest is a celebration of urban life, culture, art, music and the iconic Hillcrest sign. In August 1984, the neighborhood restored the Hillcrest sign and it has been shining bright ever since.

The 1984 sign was replaced and debuted at CityFest 2011 and community members continue each August to celebrate the sign and everything that makes Hillcrest such a desirable place to live, work and play.

The annual block party, produced by the Hillcrest Business Association (HBA), attracts nearly 100,000 people to Hillcrest's west end for the festival, which includes vendors, music, dancing and community booths. Unlike other street festivals in San Diego, CityFest has a flair and community feel that only Hillcrest can create, making it a "must-do" summer attraction for many locals.

This year's event is expected to be the biggest yet as organizers have plans to celebrate the event's three-decade history in a big way -- including a giant birthday cake.

The daylong event will also feature live music, over 300 artisans, crafters, and vendors, a waterslide, rides and a beer garden. When the sun sets, CityFest turns into a night time party with DJs and a dance floor under the Hillcrest sign. The full entertainment line-up is below.

CityFest takes place on Fifth Avenue from University Avenue to Brookes Avenue, and on University Avenue from Fourth Avenue to Sixth Avenue. The event is free and open to all ages.
