TONIGHT: Walk to honor Hillcrest hit-and-run victim

SAN DIEGO -- Friends of Aaron "Kurtis" Vorhies, the hit-and-run victim in Hillcrest, are holding a memorial march tonight and trying to raise money to pay for his funeral and burial expenses.

Paige Alexander, who identifies herself as a friend of Vorhies, has started a fundraising effort on YouCaring.com with the goal of collecting $5,000. Click HERE to contribute. To date, four supporters have pledged $165.

Vorhies, 35, died Sunday night at a local hospital after being struck about 7 pm in the 1000 block of University Avenue between 10th Avenue and Vermont Street, near Rich's nightclub. He was walking his roommate's dog, Minnie, who was unharmed in the accident.

Alexander posted on YouCaring.com that the walk will start at 7 o'clock at Park Boulevard and University Avenue on the Hillcrest/North Park border of San Diego. She invited the LGBT community to join his friends on the "walk to honor Kurtis and his role in our community" and "to remember such a great person."

"We want to raise money for a wonderful persons funeral. All donations will be given to the victims family. Please anything helps. Aaron "Kurtis" Voorheis was loving son, brother and friend," she wrote.

Minnie is currently in foster animal care and is scheduled to be reunited with owner Rudy Delgado, who shared a home with Vorhies. Delgado told NBC San Diego that he was in the hospital watching the news when he saw the report about the hit-and-run in Hillcrest and saw images of Minnie. That's when he put the pieces together and figured out that his close friend of 15 years was dead.
