FoodTV's Daisy Martinez helping to raise support for Dining Out for Life

The Dining Out for Life fundraiser is exactly what it sounds like: Eat amazing food and fight AIDS.

For San Diego residents, the national fundraiser will take place at more than 80 bars and restaurants in the area on Thursday, April 24.

Nationwide, some 3,000 restaurants, bars and cafes will donate anywhere 25% to 100% of sales to fund care, prevention, education, testing, counseling and other essential HIV/AIDS services.

SDGLN had the pleasure of speaking with DOFL spokesperson Daisy Martinez, the star of FoodTV’s "Viva Daisy" and author of three bestselling cookbooks. In addition, Daisy is an ardent supporter of raising AIDS awareness and an advocate of safe sex.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. to Puerto Rican parents, Daisy learned early on from her grandmother that the kitchen can be one of the most important rooms in the house, where family and delicious food mix. With extended family spread throughout Central America and Spain, Daisy took on an extra interest on Latin cuisine.

Beyond her renowned cooking and fame as a chef, Daisy is a philanthropist at heart. Just a few of her humanitarian endeavors include Latinas Unidas in Rochester, N.Y., The Committee for Hispanic Children and Families, and The American Cancer Society Gala/Brooklyn Chapter. In speaking with her, it’s apparent that she is a seemingly natural spokesperson for DOFL.

Daisy says she was introduced to the fundraiser a few years ago while visiting her two sons in Philadelphia, one of her favorite food-destination cities. She met the PR manager for DOFL, and said she couldn’t refuse his offer to join.

Decades ago, Daisy witnessed as friends and family members succumbed to the disease – long before researchers began looking for treatments and cures. The opportunity she has had for the past three years with DOFL has allowed her to lend her passion for food to the fight against the disease.

So it was with much excitement that Daisy announced an expected goal of $4 million this year in just one day of dining. Check out some of the participating San Diego restaurants for breakfast, lunch, dinner and cocktails.
