SAN DIEGO -- Gossip Grill, the San Diego restaurant owned by the MO’s Universe group, is about to move to the restaurant space at 1220 University Ave., which most recently housed The Range Kitchen & Cocktails.
MO's Universe management says the move will be good because it will more than double the popular restaurant's space.
Currently located at 1440 University Ave., Gossip Grill will move two blocks west at the end of November and reopen in the mixed-use restaurant/bar and catering space where The Range Kitchen & Cocktails, Eden, Universal's Dish, Ciro’s Pizzaria and ChiliCo Catering have formerly been housed. The new space at 1220 University Ave. is being developed and designed in-house by the creative team of partners that makes up MO’s Universe.
The space at 1220 University Ave., and its adjoining nightclub at 1202 University Ave. have long been watched by community members, as three businesses have opened and closed in the building since it was built out in 2008.
The nightclub/restaurant entertainment complex has struggled, and Gossip Grill will be the building's first tenant to break free of the large nightclub space at 1202 University Ave. The portion of the building that most recently housed 1202 Nightclub is being developed into retail space, and will not be included in Gossip Grill’s expansion.
“Gossip Grill will be taking over the patio and restaurant space and converting it to the same dining experience that has made Gossip Grill 'The Best Women’s Bar In The World'," said Eddie Reynoso, marketing and public relations director for MO’s Universe. "The move is a long time coming for the women’s community, offering an expanded space that is unparalleled in Southern California after the closing of West Hollywood’s The Palms."
Besides the expansion of its patio bar, the move will give Gossip Grill more inside space and a dance floor.
Gossip Grill opened as the third in the line of the MO’s Universe family of restaurants in October 2009 and introduced an acclaimed style of modern American food and cocktails that made it popular with the lesbian community in San Diego.
“There is no plan to change Gossip Grill’s current concept," said Moe Girton, Gossip Grill's general manager. "The new location will still be casual and offer eclectic, unique and bold modern American-inspired flavors and our signature cocktails that our guests have come to really love."
Joe Kraft, human resources director for MO’s Universe, welcomed the move.
“The new space brings greater event capabilities, dancing and entertainment opportunities and laid back dining under one roof. We hope the added space invites guests to enjoy the flavors of Gossip Grill and entertainment into the night,” Kraft said.
Gossip Grill's chef plans to expand menu options, thanks to an expanded kitchen space at the new location.
The new Gossip Grill is slated to open in November. Additional information is HERE.
