SAN DIEGO -- The state's Coastal Commission on Wednesday, May 15, issued a permit to the City of San Diego approving the permanent placement of a year-round rope at La Jolla Children’s Pool in order to protect the seal rookery.
“This is a remarkable beach where the urban environment of a city blends seamlessly into the natural habitat of the seals. We need to provide protection for these animals every day, especially as the seals raise their pups, born over the last several months right here in La Jolla,” Mayor Bob Filner said. “Keeping the rope up year-round is the right thing to do.”
The permit comes just weeks after a Superior Court judge ruled that the City had the right to keep the rope up permanently, not just in the winter months during the seal pupping season.
