Congressman Alcee Hastings (D-FL) yesterday introduced legislation to allow gay members of the armed forces to testify openly at Congressional hearings. If it becomes law, it will allow gay troops to testify openly without risk of discharge or other punishment.
The Dreher Law Firm and the ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties are calling for a permanent injunction stopping the city from repeating the unlawful, unconstitutional policies and practices, because “No legitimate, lawful or moral basis exists for this wholesale destruction of people’s property.”
The bill was defeated by a decisive margin of 38 to 24. The Democrats, who have a bare, one-seat majority, did not have enough votes to pass the bill without some Republican support, but not a single Republican senator voted for the measure.
Although the vote on same-sex marriage had been previously delayed and reported to have been postponed until the end of the year, NY State senators are currently deliberating the bill and are expected to vote at the end of today’s session.
