SAN DIEGO -- Congressmen Scott Peters, County Supervisor Greg Cox, San Diego Mayor Bob Filner and Santee Councilmember Jack Dale will ride bicycles on Wednesday from Downtown to the San Diego Bay to launch Bike Month in the county.
The event is being organized by the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition and SANDAG.
Before the kick-off event, the San Diego Bicycle Coalition will lead a short ride from the SANDAG offices - located at 401 B St. - to the San Diego County Administration Center with local leaders, bicycle advocacy groups and cycling fans.
May is National Bike Month and a full calendar of bicycle-related events will be held locally throughout the month, including Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 17. Bike to Work Day will include 90 pits stops around the county where riders can pick up free T-shirts and snacks.
The month of events is organized to encourage San Diegans to ride their bicycles more frequently. Riding a bicycle can get people to work or school, while also reducing air pollution, taking vehicles off roads and highways, fighting high gas prices, contributing to a better quality of life, fighting heart and lung disease, and bringing families together.
