“The Shining” returns to big screen to scare the bejeebers out of you | VIDEO

SAN DIEGO – Stanley Kubrick’s horror classic “The Shining” returns to the big screen in America’s Finest City this week, promising a night of sheer horror not seen since the film premiered in 1980.

FilmOut San Diego will present “The Shining” at 7 pm Wednesday, April 17, at the historic Birch North Park Theater. This is a rare opportunity to see this horror classic in the way it was meant to be seen: on a huge silver screen, not on television.

Kubrick and Diane Johnson co-adapted the script from Stephen King’s novel by the same name, and Kubrick “melds vivid performances, menacing settings, dreamlike tracking shots and shock after shock into a milestone of the macabre,” said Michael McQuiggan, film programmer for FilmOut San Diego.

“In a signature role, Jack Nicholson (“Heeeeere’s Johnny!”) plays Jack Torrance, who’s come to the elegant, isolated Overlook Hotel as off-season caretaker with his wife (Shelley Duvall) and son (Danny Lloyd). Torrance has never been there before – or has he? The answer lies in a ghostly time warp of madness and murder,” he said.

Jack Nicholson chews up every scene with his terrifying performance as Jack Torrance.

Heralded film director Martin Scorsese, writing in The Daily Beast in 2009, ranked “The Shining” as one of the 11 scariest horror movies of all time.

“AFI’s 100 Years … 100 Thrills” ranking of scary films puts “The Shining” at No. 29.

“AFI’s 100 Years … 100 Heroes and Villains” ranking placed Jack Nicholson’s role as Jack Torrance as the 25th greatest villain.

Nicholson’s line -- “Heeeeere’s Johnny!” – was ranked 68th most memorable quote on “AFI’s 100 Years … 100 Movie Quotes” list.

In the decades that have passed since “The Shining” debuted, film critics and scholars and fans have dissected the horror movie for various social interpretations. Click HERE to read an in-depth essay on Wikipedia.
