SANTA MONICA, Calif. – A handful of anti-gay protesters from the Kansas hate group Westboro Baptist Church showed up outside Santa Monica High on Monday to protest the school’s Gay Straight Alliance (GSA).
The haters were greeted across the street by hundreds of counter-protesters, who held up signs in support of LGBT students and a large rainbow flag.
Logan Henderson, president of the school’s GSA, said via email:
Right now, the Westboro Baptist Church is outside my high school telling me and my friends that we're sinful, tainted, damned.
But we will not give in to hate.
Instead, my GSA sees a brilliant opportunity to bring our community together in peace, love, and unity -- and support the life-saving work of GSA clubs nationwide. …
My GSA has the support of several community members, students, and staff at our school. Not all students have that support, or the tools they need to bring awareness and educate their community. If we want to stop hatred, we must increase the number of GSAs nationwide, and that's why we're using this day to support GSA Network. …
My friends and I have devoted ourselves to making Santa Monica High School a place where LGBTQ students can express themselves without fear.
Let's empower GSAs across the country to do the same.
