Boy Scouts camp counselor in San Diego comes out in ‘It Gets Better’ VIDEO

SAN DIEGO -- Derek Nance, a program director at the Mataguay Scout Ranch in San Diego, came out in an “It Gets Better” video posted on YouTube on Thursday.

Nance speaks out against the Boy Scouts of America’s anti-gay policies and says he knows “the time will come when LGBT Scouts can openly serve on summer camp staff and participate in the Scouting program, but for now the most important thing we can do is talk about the issue.”

Nance cited Tim Griffin, a former Eagle Scout who was fired from his job last August because he’s gay, as one of the reasons he had to come out.

In July, the Boy Scouts of America reaffirmed its long-standing policy that prohibits openly gay members from joining the organization and bans gays and lesbians from serving as scout leaders.

The policy has provoked backlash for the organization, including criticism from President Barack Obama.
