Surfrider Foundation to rally to stop seismic testing off California's Central Coast

SANTA MONICA, Calif. -- The Surfrider Foundation is calling on supporters to rally on Wednesday, Nov. 14, in opposition of a proposed seismic testing project along California’s Central Coast.

The rally will take place during the California Coastal Commission meeting at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.

The commission is scheduled to hear arguments from Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), who have submitted an application to conduct an extensive seismic surveying project along the coast of San Luis Obispo. The project, which is being done under the auspices of gathering information for the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant, involves towing powerful air cannons off the Central Coast, shooting deafening underwater explosions (upwards of 250 decibels) every 13 seconds for 17 straight days.

The Surfrider Foundation and other groups maintain that similar surveying information already exists and the project unnecessarily puts marine life at risk.

“This project directly threatens scores of marine mammals, including various species of whales, dolphins, seals and sea otters,” says Chad Nelsen, Environmental Director for the Surfrider Foundation. “In addition to threatening wildlife, this project could put ocean recreationalists, including swimmers, divers and surfers at risk.”

Surfrider Foundation has organized similar rallies in the past, including a massive demonstration which drew over 3,000 people at a Coastal Commission hearing in 2008 to stop a environmentally damaging toll road project near San Onofre State Park.

“We need people to turn out and let our state officials know that needlessly putting citizens and our natural resources in harm’s way is unacceptable,” says Stefanie Sekich-Quinn, Surfrider Foundation’s California Policy Manager.

With the support of Vans, the Surfrider Foundation will be hosting a pancake breakfast for supporters beginning at 7 am.
