Young man gunned down in Hillcrest

SAN DIEGO – A shooter who gunned down a young man in Hillcrest early Monday remains on the loose, police said.

Someone shot a man, age estimated to be about 24, around 2:30 am in the area of Upas and Richmond streets in Hillcrest, near the entrance to Balboa Park. The victim's name is unknown at this time.

Several people called 911 to report hearing gunshots, San Diego police Lt. Ernie Herbert said.

Officers responding to the scene found the man lying in the street, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He is in critical condition at a local hospital, police said.

"Detectives and forensic specialists are processing the scene for evidence and looking to identify and interview any witnesses,'' Herbert said.
