HOBART, Tasmania, Australia -- Tasmania's Legislative Council has started debating a bill that could make the state the first in the country to legalize gay marriage.
The House of Assembly passed the Labor-Green same-sex marriage bill last month, 13 votes to 11.
Dozens of gay rights campaigners packed the public gallery for the debate, which continued late into the night on Wednesday.
Before the debate beganit was still unclear how some members would vote, with at least four saying they are undecided.
There may not be a vote until Thursday.
