Early morning fire forces closure of Babbo's Bar and Grille

SAN DIEGO -- A fire erupted inside Babbo's Bar and Grille, a popular University Heights restaurant, early this morning around 1:30 am, CBS 8 News reports.

The restaurant, which has a loyal LGBT following, recently reopened in a new location on Park Boulevard after its original location on University Avenue in Hillcrest suddenly closed last year due to reported flooding in the building.

At the new location, staff had been working to expand the restaurant's menu offerings and added a full bar.

The CBS 8 report says that crews were called to the scene around 1:30 am after several calls of smoke coming from inside the building were received. The building's sprinklers went off, which assisted crews in putting out the fire that appears to have started in the kitchen.

The following message was posted on Babbo's Bar and Grille's Facebook page today around 10 am:

It's with great disappointment that Babbo's Bar and Grille will be closed until further notice. There was a fire last night at approximately 1:30 am.
And so we begin again... With love.

There is no word yet on damage estimates.
