Anti-gay activist accused of being serial molester of young boys

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – An anti-gay activist and Proposition 8 donor is scheduled to appear in San Bernardino Superior Court on Tuesday, Aug. 28, on charges that he molested young boys.

Bail was set at $2.5 million in the case, because the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department believes that the suspect has been a serial molester for decades and is asking for victims to come forward.

Caleb Douglas Hesse, 52, was arrested on Aug. 15 by authorities in the town of Yucca Valley, according to the Sheriff’s Department. He is accused of lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14.

Hesse is being held in the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga.

A first-grade teacher at Friendly Hills Elementary School in Joshua Tree, Hesse is also a longtime youth volunteer with the Evangelical Free Church of Yucca Valley. The church is part of a denomination that is known to be anti-gay and against marriage equality.

The Sheriff’s Department told KESQ.com in Palm Springs that Hesse may have molested boys since the early 1980s when he began volunteering with his Evangelical church. Investigators said that some of the victims today could be in their 30s and 40s. Anyone who is a victim or may have additional information about these molestations are asked to contact Detective Kirby at 909-387-3615.

KTLA reported that investigators believe that the suspect molested boys mostly during overnight trips with the church.

The Conservative Babylon website resurrected a file on Hesse showing that he donated $100 to ProtectMarriage.com on Sept. 22, 2008.

Initially, Hesse told authorities that he did have inappropriate contact with minors but later recanted his confession during his Aug. 21 arraignment.
