SAN DIEGO -- A beloved Hillcrest diner, Brians' American Eatery, will close Saturday night, a staff member at the restaurant said today.
Customers of Brians' -- known for its hearty food and large portions -- will have until closing time Saturday night to enjoy the restaurant's comfortable atmosphere, friendly staff and food. The diner is extremely popular within the LGBT community.
The staff member said that one of the diner's co-owners sold his share, which made it difficult for the remaining owner to keep the business afloat.
The restaurant, which opened more than 10 years ago, got its name from its owners, both named Brian: Brian Stout and Brian Savage. Referred to by many as a "classic American diner," Brian's has been a longtime supporter of LGBT community causes and charities.
The restaurant looks like a classic 1960s roadside diner, complete with an iconic neon sign. Before opening as Brian's, the restaurant had been known as Topsy's Diner under previous ownership.
The staff member also said that the restaurant will likely reopen in a couple of months under new ownership with a new name.
Charlie Vasquez, a server at Brians', posted a Facebook invitation today encouraging customers to "Come visit us at Brians!!!! We close on Sat at 12 am ..."
"We have our daily specials still going on for you to enjoy and get your last fill of Brians one more time," wrote Vasquez. "Plus you get to see the staff as well one more time!!! So swing come have a beer and enjoy the memories that you have had there!!!!!"
The daily specials include prime rib today; all-you-can-eat fish and chips or lasagna tomorrow; and all-you-can-eat BBQ beef ribs on Saturday.
SDGLN will post additional information as it becomes available.
