WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- Just in time for this weekend's LA Pride Celebration, a set of crosswalks along Santa Monica Boulevard have been painted with rainbow colors.
The proposal, brought to the City Council by LA artist Martin Duvander, and sponsored by Mayor Jeff Prang and Councilmember John Duran, was passed on the council’s consent agenda on Monday, June 4.
The crosswalks located at the intersection of San Vicente Boulevard and Santa Monica Boulevard will be painted rainbow for the entire month of June.
Duvander wrote to the West Hollywood City Council on April 19 with his idea, and was surprised and happy to receive a letter from Prang and Duran saying they supported the idea but would have to present it to the entire council.
Media outlets, including SDGLN, picked up on Duvander's story and encouraged readers to send letters of support for the project to the council.
Attending Monday night's council meeting, Duvander said it was very exciting to see the item pass.
"It passed with such ease," Duvander said of the council meeting. "I thought we would have to to fight for it but all council members including the Mayor voted in favor. I was very proud at that moment to see American democracy in action. To be part of that process was very exiting and I was honored to be part of it."
While the council only voted to approve the painting of the crosswalks for this year, Duvander hopes that it will become an annual tradition in the city, which prides itself on its commitment to diversity and inclusion. West Hollywood is known as being home to a large concentration of LGBT residents, businesses, and community organizations.
"I think the passing of this project is a very powerful statement," Duvander said. "A gentleman at the City Council meeting told me that this intersection is a symbol of gay/lesbian rights, it was there where many demonstrations had gathered. So to be smack in the middle of it is an honor."
Duvander also hopes that his idea will be picked up by other cities around the world, and offered his services to San Diego, should they choose to follow suit for Pride.
The West Hollywood crosswalk was painted by city staff on Thursday morning.
