On Harvey Milk's birthday, Long Beach breaks ground on park to be named in his honor

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Civic leaders, including the openly gay Long Beach City Councilmember Robert Garcia, broke ground today for the new Harvey Milk Promenade Park at Third Street and The Promenade Park.

Stuart Milk, nephew of Harvey Milk who was representing the Harvey Milk Foundation, also attended the ceremony.

Long Beach becomes the first American city to name a park after the slain gay civil-rights hero.

Later today, San Diego becomes the first city in the world to name a street after Milk. That ceremony begins at 5 pm today at The Center in Hillcrest. Read the full story HERE.
