City Council to take action on Harvey Milk Street proposal Tuesday

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego may become the first city in the nation to have a street named after LGBT civil rights icon Harvey Milk.

After winding its way through the city's planning process, the proposal to rename Hillcrest's Blaine Avenue will be heard by the City Council on Tuesday, May 8, at its 2 pm session.

After receiving the thumbs up from a number of community groups and the city's Planning Commission, the City Council will review the item and is expected to take action on it. The City Council's vote will be the final say on whether or not the project can be implemented.

Blaine Avenue is a small street that runs three blocks from Cleveland Avenue, crosses over Normal Street, and ends at Centre Street, just across from the steps of The San Diego LGBT Community Center.

San Diego LGBT Pride, which has taken leadership on the project, is encouraging community members to come to Tuesday's meeting to show their support for the proposal. Many supporters will be attending the meeting wearing "white for Milk."

The item is number 336 on the council's docket for the day.

The meeting of the San Diego City Council will take place at the City of San Diego Council Chambers, located at 202 C St., 12th floor, in downtown.
