SAN DIEGO -- The four major San Diego mayoral candidates – District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, Councilmember Carl DeMaio, Congressmember Bob Filner and Assemblymember Nathan Fletcher – attended the LGBT-District Three Forum held at The LGBT Center on March 28. Moderated by KPBS Morning Edition anchor Tom Fudge, the forum was organized to address specific concerns the LGBT community had for the mayoral candidates.
At the standing room only event, the candidates fielded questions from the audience, which were written down on index cards and given to Fudge, who selected specific ones to ask and gave each candidate an opportunity to answer.
Filner received the loudest round of applause for his opening statement after pointing out two of the candidates, openly gay Dumanis and DeMaio, were elected to their current positions without their sexuality being an issue. “Isn’t that what we always wanted,” he asked.
