SAN DIEGO -- Renowned street artist Mark Paul Deren, aka Madsteez, has been commissioned to create two murals in San Diego, one of which will be painted on an outer wall of Wang's Restaurant in North Park.
The murals are being organized by Pacific San Diego Magazine as a collaborative street art project that will coincide with the magazine's annual art issue, "Sight and Sound," to be released in April.
Along with the mural on the wall of Wang's, another will be painted in the Gaslamp Quarter in an underground passageway that leads to the popular wine parlor, Vin De Syrah.
The Wang's mural will be painted on the wall that overlooks Ray Street, which is one of San Diego's best-known art and culture districts.
Many of Madsteez’s murals have become destination landmarks, and his style of incorporating political and pop-culture references into the landscape has attracted the attention of top national brands. Nike, Mini Cooper, Target and Red Bull have tapped into Steez’s creativity, giving "street cred" to multimillion-dollar campaigns.
The artist says he is donating his work to San Diego to encourage out-of-the-box creation of art in the community and raise awareness for Pacific Magazine's art issue.
Work on the project began Monday and is expected to be completed on Friday.
