San Diego Pride chooses 2012 theme

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego LGBT Pride has selected "America's Pride" as the theme for its 38th annual Pride Celebration Weekend, to be held July 20-22.

Dwayne Crenshaw, executive director of San Diego LGBT Pride, explains the theme in a news release issued today:

"The promise of America grounded in the Constitution, contained in our Pledge of Allegiance, inscribed on the Statue of Liberty and enunciated by generations of our nation’s leaders is that America stands for liberty, for justice, for equality for all. This has been America’s Pride,” Crenshaw said.

Last year, San Diego Pride made history and worldwide news by having the first-ever contingent of active duty military personnel in a LGBT pride parade. With the "America's Pride" theme, San Diego Pride hopes to continue to break new ground and push issues of equality forward.

Known around the world as America's Finest City, San Diego has been at the forefront of many LGBT rights issues in recent years. For example, Mayor Jerry Sanders is co-chairing a group of the nation's mayors advocating for marriage equality. San Diego Unified School District instituted a comprehensive anti-bullying policy, making it the first and largest school district in the country to do so. San Diego Pride hopes to highlight and celebrate these local advances.

“We look forward to a fun, fantastic celebration here in San Diego of the advances in LGBT equality from the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ to the addition of Washington and Maryland to the growing list of states with marriage equality. If justice prevails, we will be able to celebrate marriage equality in California too,” Crenshaw said.

“If not, marriage equality in California along with issues such as preventing bullying of LGBT youth to ending discrimination against LGBT individuals and families in all areas of life will take center stage as we promote the full realization of America’s Pride,” he said.

“We are excited about fusing the fundamental ideas of LGBT Pride with ideals of American Pride. We welcome everyone across this country to join us in San Diego for a celebration of America’s Pride and to help us focus attention and raise awareness of the need for our nation to fulfill its promise of ‘liberty and justice for all,’" Crenshaw said.

In upcoming weeks, the organization will send out additional announcements about the the lineup of speakers, entertainers, attractions and civil rights events that will take place over Pride weekend.
