Memorial service for Jason "Cowboy" Huggins planned for Monday in Hillcrest

SAN DIEGO -- A wake and memorial service for Jason "Cowboy" Huggins will be held Monday, July 11, from 6 to 8 pm at Merkley-Mitchell Mortuary in Hillcrest, said Justin Newman.

Huggins, 31, died early Wednesday morning as a result of severe brain damage that he suffered after being attacked and bludgeoned with a rock in a canyon in Hillcrest.

Huggins' uncle and aunt, Mark and Jennifer Sanders, came to San Diego early this week to be with their nephew in his final days and are now organizing the service. The family plans to have another service at a later date in Clarksville, Tenn., where Huggins was born and spent most of his early life.

Newman, who was a close friend to Huggins, invites anyone who wishes to pay their respects to Huggins to attend the service.

Also, those who would like to contribute to help out Huggins' family with travel and funeral expenses may contact Newman at (619) 800-2105 or via email at jnrepairs@gmail.com.

Merkley-Mitchell Mortuary is located at 3655 Fifth Ave. in Hillcrest.
