Romance is in the air at the San Diego Women’s Chorus spring concert series

SAN DIEGO -- If you’re in the mood for some romance, you’ll want to check out the San Diego Women’s Chorus spring concert series.

The shows will be held Saturday, May 21, and Sunday, May 22, at the Mission Hills United Church of Christ.

The concerts will feature something for everyone, with covers of songs by Lady Gaga, Collie Caillet, Cher, k.d. Lang and some other surprises, as well. This year the ladies are moving and shaking with some choreography and dance routines that are more complex than anything they’ve done in past performances, organizers said.

“With the show being titled ‘Romance,’ we had to have ‘Bad Romance’ by Lady Gaga,” said Carin Scheinin, who serves as president of the board of directors for SDWC and is also a singer in the group. “We also have some dancing, which has us all really excited, but also jittery, because it’s very unlike anything that we’ve done before.”

“Romance” may be the title for the show, “but it’s not just about being in love,” Scheinin said.

“This is a great show for everyone. The whole concept came out of the It Gets Better campaign. It’s about exploring different types of love; romantic love, love of one’s self. We also have a lot of popular artists that we’re covering, so I think there will be a lot of dancing in seats and singing along.”

Started in 1987, the SDWC is lesbian identified. What this means is that they’ve always focused on singing music that is for women, they've always felt very tied to the LGBT community and above all else, want to make sure that everyone singing with them is comfortable.

The group is open to all women to join, as long as they can “keep pitch with the piano.” The youngest member joined when she was just 15, while the oldest member just celebrated her 74th birthday. Even though the group is lesbian identified, but you don’t have to be LGBT to join.

“This group has a great desire to make the best music possible,” said Chris Allen, the chorus’ artistic director since 1996. “Unlike some groups, there is no ageism, no one is clique-ish; 95% of the time they come to work and there is just a great sense of sisterhood among them.”

They have performed for crowds numbering into the thousands and shared the stage with greats like Barry Manilow and folk legend Holly Near. Now it’s your chance to see these ladies in action.

The concerts are Saturday, May 21, at 7 pm and Sunday, May 22, at 3 p.m. Each performance will be at the Mission Hills United Church of Christ, 4070 Jackdaw St. At intermission there will be light snacks and an opportunity drawing with prizes that include zoo passes, cookbooks and more.

Tickets are $15 with discounts for seniors, military, students and disabled attendees. For more information or to purchase tickets click HERE or call (619) 291-FEMM (3366).
