SAN DIEGO – Councilmember Todd Gloria is touting good news about three parks in District 3 and invited residents to two events.
Gloria said long overdue improvements are on the way for North Park Community Park.
Thanks to a partnership with San Diego Unified School District and board president Richard Barrera, the district will invest $630,000 into the joint-use area at North Park Community Park.
Improvements will include a new basketball court, replacement of 30-foot light poles at the playground, a new playground surface, replacement of damaged sidewalks surrounding the school and the park, a new ornamental fence surrounding the joint-use field, and security improvements.
These amenities will benefit residents as well as the students of the ALBA School recently relocated to the former North Park Elementary School site.
On Friday, Gloria will join with community members and city staff to break ground on long-awaited improvements to Montclair Park and Birney Elementary School.
The first ground-breaking ceremony will be at 11 a.m. at Montclair Park, 2911 Nile St., in North Park.
The playground at Montclair Park was badly damaged in a car accident years ago. Complications arising from the accident delayed repairs to the park. The return of playground equipment is anticipated by late spring.
Renovations to the joint-use field at Birney Elementary School in University Heights will also get underway on Friday. Completion of work is expected by the fall.
The second ground-breaking ceremony will be at 1 p.m. at Birney Elementary School,
4345 Campus Ave., in University Heights
“Your Business Matters,” a free informational event for small businesses, will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, at North Park Lions Club, 3927 Utah St.
A “Community Coffee with Your Councilmember” will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Babycakes, 3766 Fifth Ave., in Hillcrest.
