(HILLCREST) – The San Diego LGBT Community Center today announced that the S. Mark Taper Foundation has donated $25,000 in support of the Sunburst Housing Project, which provides safe and supportive housing for San Diego’s homeless youth, including LBGT and HIV-positive individuals.
The 23-unit facility is located in downtown San Diego, close to City College, public transportation, community health facilities and other essential resources. The facility is wheelchair accessible and contains two units that have been retrofitted to accommodate persons in wheelchairs. A major goal of YHP is to ensure that youth have easy access to needed services that will support them in maintaining stable housing.
“We are grateful to the Taper Foundation for their continuing support of The Center,” said Center development director Jeffrey M. Wergeles. “We couldn’t be happier about their latest commitment, which will provide needed funding for programs and services that help to ensure the well-being of homeless youth in the San Diego community.”
The S. Mark Taper Foundation was founded in 1989 to support a variety of causes and institutions that enhance the quality of life. Grant recipients include, but are not limited to, organizations whose work focuses on: the environment, the disabled, abused women and children, community health care, hunger, the homeless, job training, the creative arts, public school improvement, child care, youth programs, the hearing impaired and partially sighted, and the management of nonprofit organizations.
