(HOUSTON) Annise Parker took her Mayoral office oath at a private ceremony held Saturday January 2 at the City Hall in Houston. Kathy Hubbard, Parker’s partner of almost 19 years, stood by her side during the ceremony, holding Parker’s grandparents’ bible, while State District Judge Steven Kirkland administered the oath.
On Sunday evening, more than 500 people from the GLBT community packed the ballroom of the Four Seasons Hotel for "Celebrate Victory! - A Party to Welcome the New Mayor of Houston, Annise Parker!"
Among the attendees were representatives from several prominent GLBT organizations such as Equality Texas, Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, Houston Area Stonewall Democrats, Houston GLBT Political Caucus, Houston Stonewall Young Democrats (HSYD), Human Rights Campaign (HRC), Lambda Legal and Pride Houston.
Parker addressed the victory party crowd in an emotional speech, acknowledging the historic symbolism of her election. "I am more excited than you can imagine; more proud than you will ever know."
A public swearing in followed on Monday.
