(SAN DIEGO) /PRNewswire/ -- The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) has been named the sole beneficiary of San Diego's Rock N Roll Marathon, which is planned for June 6, 2010. Funds are raised through LLS's Team In Training (TNT) program, which is the world's largest endurance sports training program and the largest fundraiser for LLS. Between 3,500 and 5,000 TNT members are expected to participate from around the country in this year's Rock N Roll Marathon.
TNT prepares people of all athletic abilities to run or walk a 26.2-mile marathon or a 13.1-mile half marathon, or to complete a 100-mile (century) bike ride, take a challenging hiking adventure or do a triathlon. In return for professional training and travel to one of many national event sites, participants raise valuable funds to support LLS's mission.
Since its inception in 1988, when a team of 38 runners trained together for the New York City Marathon and raised $320,000, TNT has prepared more than 390,000 people--approximately 40,000 participants annually. TNT participants have raised over $950 million to support blood cancer research and patient services. The enormous success of this program has helped make possible advances in blood cancer therapies and treatments that have prolonged and enhanced the lives of hundreds of thousands of patients.
