Bob Nelson, former chair of the San Diego LGBT Community Center’s Board of Directors, was recently selected as chair of the San Diego Convention Center Corporation Board of Directors. The nine-member board of directors, comprised of business and community leaders, establishes policy for the Convention Center Corporation. The Mayor and City Council of San Diego appoint seven members, while two non-voting members represent the Hotel-Motel Association and the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Nelson was first appointed to the Convention Center Corporation Board in March 2006 by Mayor Jerry Sanders. The Corporation manages an annual budget of $34.8 million and employs a staff of approximately 559 people at the Convention Center. Nelson was appointed to the Board initially because of his numerous civic commitments, including service to the City of San Diego Public Utilities Advisory Commission, San Diego Taxpayer’s Association, the San Diego Democratic Club, and The Center.
