(SAN DIEGO) On October 12, 2009, San Diego’s Republican mayor Jerry Sanders will be joining the La Jolla Playhouse cast in the reading of The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later.
The reading will be helmed by acclaimed director Darko Tresnjak. In addition to the mayor, the cast includes Doug Wright, Pulitzer Prize-winner and adapter/director of the Playhouse’s upcoming production of Creditors, San Diego Rep Artistic Director Sam Woodhouse, District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, as well as the acclaimed actors Mare Winningham, Robert Foxworth, Amanda Naughton, James Newcomb, Stark Sands, T. Ryder Smith, James Sutorius, among many others
The epilogue focuses on the long-term effect of the murder of Matthew Shepard on the town of Laramie. It explores how the town has changed and how the murder continues to reverberate in the community. The play also includes new interviews with Matthew's mother Judy Shepard and Mathew's murderer Aaron McKinney, who’s serving dual life sentences, as well as follow-up interviews with many of the individuals from the original piece.
In June 2008, members of Tectonic Theater Project returned to Laramie, Wyoming to explore how the town had changed in the ten years since Matthew Shepard’s murder. What they found defied their expectations. The result is a new play about how we construct our own history. This is the continuing story of an American Town.
Mayor Sanders is best known for his reversal in his opposition to marriage equality in 2007 when he revealed his daughter, Lisa, is a lesbian.
