(Cologne, Germany)– In a much anticipated announcement from the Federation of Gay Games, Cleveland, Ohio, was selected today as the winning city to host the 2014 Gay Games. The Games are quadrennial and boast worldwide participation. Washington, D.C.’s Metropolitan Washington Gaymes committee fought hard to win the bid amid a tough, three-way competition that also included Boston, Massachusetts. The announcement of the winning city was delivered by members of the Board of the Federation at their annual meeting in Cologne, Germany.
"We’re grateful to the leadership of the Federation of Gay Games for giving us the opportunity to bid on Gay Game IX," said Vince Micone, President of the Metropolitan Washington Gaymes bid committee. "And we congratulate the winners. Their team did an outstanding job. We wish them all the best and look forward to having Washington, D.C.’s multitude of LGBT sports teams participate in the Gay Games in 2014."
The delegation in Cologne from the Metropolitan Washington Gaymes committee included President Vince Micone and Vice President Lynne Brown along with Deputy D.C. Mayor Valerie Santos, D.C. City Councilmember David Catania and representatives from Destination DC, the Greater Washington Sports Alliance, Team DC and members of the Board of the Metropolitan Washington Gaymes.
