SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The California LGBT Health & Human Services Network has established a new partnership with Health Access, a statewide health care consumer advocacy coalition.
"We want our state's health system to work for all Californians, including the LGBT community. We are pleased to partner with the LGBT HHS Network to find ways to maximize the benefits of health reform for the LGBT community, and to further our mission of empowering organizations to be as effective as possible in advocating for their communities on health issues," said Anthony Wright, executive director of Health Access. “There is tremendous synergy between us and lots of work to be done.”
“LGBT individuals and families face many unique issues and barriers to healthcare. The green light on the Affordable Care Act offers an opportune moment for our community to increase our access to healthcare,” said Judy Appel, Steering Committee member of the Network and Executive Director of Our Family Coalition. “Over the past five years, the Network’s membership has grown significantly. We are excited to engage in this vital work together to address the issues of LGBT individuals and families.”
"Equality California Institute was proud to host the Network in its formative stage. As it has matured, it seems appropriate to house the Network with one of the premiere organizations working to guarantee a just, affordable, and high quality health care system for LGBT people. That is an important development in LGBT health reform," said Cary Davidson, Equality California Institute board president. "Transforming the Network through this new partnership will ensure that this critical work gets the full focus it deserves. We are excited about this new strategic direction and look forward to continuing our relationship with the Network as a member organization.”
The California LGBT HHS Network recently received funding from the San Francisco Foundation and The California Endowment. These grants have been awarded to ensure that the needs of LGBT individuals and families are incorporated intoCalifornia’s health care reform and state-level health regulations. With the recent United States Supreme Court’s upholding of the Affordable Care Act, health advocacy is even more critical and time sensitive.
