Collin Martin, a professional soccer player, made sports headlines two years ago after coming out publically while playing for the Minnesota United. That held historic significance because it made him the only out player in all five major sports organizations.

But Martin is ditching the cold and coming to the west coast. Earlier this month he was signed to play for the San Diego Loyal Soccer Club (SD Loyal). Charles James Adams (Charlie Adams) and Morgan Hackworth were also signed.

The players will join the Club for its inaugural USL Championship season in 2020. The first regular season home game is scheduled to take place on March 7 at San Diego's Torero Stadium against the Las Vegas Lights FC.

“When forming our roster, we wanted to build a team of players that would rival any in the USL Championship,” said EVP of Soccer Operations and First Team Manager Landon Donovan. “The additions of Charlie, Morgan and Collin show our commitment to bringing San Diego a team that will be competitive from the first game of the season. We are fortunate to have these three young men join Team 1.”

In a 2019 interview for Bethesda Magazine, Martin was asked if he thought other athletes coming out in pro sports was difficult.

"It may be," he said. "Possibly because of their sponsors—or a macho image. But it’s just as hard if you’re playing soccer abroad, in Spain or Italy or Africa. There’s not a single [male] person who’s out in any other pro league around the world. There’s so many soccer players who are in the closet and can’t come out because of their clubs and their sponsorships, especially in Spain. There’s tons."
