Gay therapist Matthew J. Dempsey continues his YouTube advice series.
Psychotherapist and YouTube personality Matthew J. Dempsey continues his virtual YouTube sessions with his latest talk, "Why Gays Should Be Needy."
Matthew is tackling the subject of relationships and how expressing your needs and adhering to boundaries can lead to something you both want.
He asks: "Were you the best little kid in the world? Don't wanna make any waves? Maybe rebelled from an early age and now don't take any shit?"
He goes on to say that whatever you answered above might be an indicator of how self-confident you are now, especially as a part of the queer community.
"Pacifying or aggressing are two sides of the same defensive coin that stem from our own underlying fear that we're not really worth caring about," he writes in a statement. "In a world where we learn both emotional needs and Queerness are wrong, trying to find a nondefensive but strong voice to use for ourselves can seem impossible."
His video discussion addresses the importance of "not only how but why we should speak up when our needs are going unmet."
Matthew is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) who graduated with both a Masters of Arts and a Masters of Education in Psychological Counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University.
